If you’re planning graduation photos in Boulder, choosing the right location makes a huge difference. Between the mountains, open fields, and campus spots, there are so many options, but a few stand out for consistently good light and an easy, natural feel.
These are some of my go-to locations for CU Boulder graduation photos.

This is definitely the most classic and popular choice for graduation photos in Boulder, and for good reason. The Flatirons create such a recognizable backdrop, and the open space makes it easy to get a mix of shots without feeling too confined. I usually recommend shooting about an hour before sunset, since the sun drops behind the mountains earlier here and the light softens really quickly. That timing helps everything feel warmer and more even, which makes a big difference in the final photos.

If you want something less traditional, Flagstaff is one of my favorite areas. It has a mix of overlooks, trees, and quieter spots that give your photos more variety and a slightly different feel than the typical Boulder locations. The light tends to be softer up there, especially later in the day, which makes everything feel more relaxed and natural.

Campus is always meaningful and personal.
Some of the best spots:

Flatirons Vista is a great option if you want a more open, natural feel without the crowds of Chautauqua. You still get the Flatirons in the background, but with wide fields and more space to move around.
It’s perfect for photos that feel relaxed and less posed, especially if you want a mix of walking shots and simple portraits.
Best time to shoot here is golden hour, when the light hits the fields and gives everything a soft, warm look.

This is a more hidden spot that adds a really nice rustic touch. The light and open grass work beautifully here, especially later in the day, and it feels a bit more natural and less crowded than some of the main locations. I’m not totally sure about the rules around the trees or property, so just be mindful of where you’re shooting.

If you’re looking for something a little different, there are also great options like flower fields, farms, or more private properties with cool props. These can feel more styled/editorial and less crowded than the typical Boulder spots.
The only thing to keep in mind is that these locations are often seasonal or require permission, so availability can change depending on the time of year.
If you’re planning your graduation photos, I’d love to help you choose a location and create something that feels natural and true to you.
